Teeth Scaling is a procedure performed for the removal of tartar, plaque and stains from the tooth surface and deep from roots. Dentists recommend dental scaling once every 6-8 months to prevent teeth and gums from further damage. 

When teeth scaling is done along with the root planing procedure, it is termed deep cleaning. In this procedure, the gums are opened for the removal of build-up plaque and removal of biofilm. This is an effective procedure to decrease gum inflammation.

The dentist then starts with the actual procedure, with a help of an ultrasonic scaler, an instrument used for sending vibrations to the tooth to loosen and remove the plaque deposits. Simultaneously, water is spilt in the mouth to remove the debris away.

Once done, the dentist may then use the hand scaler for removal of smaller deposits and can reach deeper areas where the ultrasonic scaler won’t reach.

After the dental scaling procedure, the dentist will polish the teeth using a handpiece equipped with a cup containing soft rubber. A polishing paste is then placed on the rubber cup, which is then applied to the patient’s teeth using the handpiece. The patient is asked to rinse the mouth thoroughly once the polishing is complete. This complete procedure is called teeth scale and polish.
