Why Gum Surgeries Are More Beneficial Than Others?

Dental implants stand out from other tooth replacement options due to their remarkable benefits. Unlike dentures or bridges, they are:

1. Permanent: Dental implants are a long-lasting solution that can last a lifetime with proper care.

2. Natural Appearance: They look and feel like real teeth, seamlessly making your smile natural.

3. Comfortable: You won’t even notice they’re there – no slipping, discomfort, or adhesive creams.

4. Preserve Bone Health: Implants stimulate your jawbone, preventing bone loss and maintaining facial structure.

There are multiple risk factors associated with Gum swelling or teeth gum swelling. Here are some of the risk factors affecting gum care and resulting in Gum Surgery;

  • Smoking: Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors associated with gum disease. It also lowers the chances of successful treatment recovery.
  • Hormonal changes in women: These changes make gums sensitive and create a favourable environment for gum disease to develop.
  • Diabetes: People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing gum infection resulting in gum inflammation.
  • Genetic susceptibility: Genetically, some people are more prone to develop gum infection or disease compared to others.
  • Side effects of medications: Multiple medications have side effects that can reduce the flow of saliva. Saliva contains a protective layer in the mouth, which is required to keep the infections away.

Anybody can identify, if they are going through gum disease and needs immediate attention from a dentist through its symptoms. A person with gum disorder will typically show one or more of the below-mentioned symptoms:

  • Gum inflammation or gum swelling
  • Red/Purple gums
    White spots on the gums
  • Painful gums when touched
  • Extra space appearing between the teeth
  • Pus visible between the gums and the teeth
  • Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing
    A bad taste left in the mouth
  • Bad breath or smell
    Extensive tooth loss

Gum Surgery is aimed at controlling the existing infection of teeth gum swelling from progressing. There are multiple Surgeries available to treat gum disease;

  • Scaling and root planing: If there is some bone loss or gums are receding, your dentist will recommend a common but rigorous deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing. Scaling involves scraping the plaque and tartar away from the above and below the gum line. Root planing smoothens uneven spots on the teeth root where bacteria grow. This smoothening and cleaning of the surface assists the gums in reattaching to the teeth.
  • Curettage: Curettage of scraping away unhealthy gum tissue from the infected area and allowing it to heal.
  • Flap Surgery: Flap surgery is a procedure that allows a dentist to reach the root of your teeth and bone. It is usually performed if scaling and root planing is ineffective at removing the gum infection.
  • Bone grafts: If the bone has been damaged due to the infection, bone grafts will be used to replace it. For this procedure, a small piece of bone will be positioned where the original bone was destroyed. These grafts work as a platform for the bone to grow and restore the stability of the teeth.

Gum surgery is not painful as the procedure is performed by giving local anesthesia by a Periodontist. The gums are pulled back and tartar build-up is removed under the surgery, the tooth is later smoothed to reduce the hidden spaces between the teeth where bacteria can grow easily thereby causing gum swelling and gum bleeding.

Most people feel mild pain after the surgery, which can be managed with prescribed pain relievers. If a minor gum swelling is experienced, you can use an ice pack in the affected area.
